This talk is to study the convergence of the perfectly matched layer (PML) method for scattering problems in layered media. The PML method is widely used in the engineering literature and very efficient to solve wave scattering problems. In 2010, we first proved the exponential convergence of PML method for the Helmholtz scattering problem in two-layer media. Since the background materials are different in the upper and lower half spaces, the scattering waves will change their directions at the interface and split into reflective and refractive waves on two sides of the interface. The Green function of the scattering problem in layered media becomes very complicated. Their proof is very technical and depends on elaborates estimates for the Green function. In this talk, I develop new techniques to estimate the Green function and simplify the proof considerably. I shall also extend the theory to time-harmonic electromagnetic scattering problems in two-layer media.
